As our October rituals wash away crimson and seep into the impending winds of winter, I am revisiting a foundational text of Music to Scry To in the form of Broadcast.
Perhaps the most immediate track on Berberian Sound Studio, the soundtrack to a film about creating a soundtrack to a film, “Teresa, Lark of Ascension” swims in variations of its own melodies, slowly ebbing and flowing with delay. Keenan’s voice is rendered ghostly, soothing and sweet while the tinkling of a vibraphone patters and plods along with faraway echoes and organ slowing obscuring our vision, leaving us with a bittersweet coda.
Broadcast took influence from many configurations and strains of esoterica but for Berberian Sound Studio, their encyclopedic retooling of library music, hauntology and psych-era production unravels in full form, laying bare their clear-eyed visions.
Will we rest soundly?
