The short-lived Anno Luz released a single, self-titled record in 1988 on the small Prog Rock label Som Interior. The record is awash in bright, sometimes eerie, synthesizers paired with the organic textures of acoustic guitars, flutes and piano. On first blush the open-ended compositions bear similarities to Tangerine Dream or Vangelis. On deeper inspection, a more implacable darkness and intimacy is conjured.
Featured on Music From Memory’s Outro Tempo: Electronic And Contemporary Music From Brazil 1978-1992, “Por Quê” is simultaneously alien and familiar. The compilation’s intent was to feature music “that explores the outer reaches of Brazilian music, where indigenous rhythms mix with synthesizers and where MPB mingles with drum computers.” Slinky digital and analogue synthesizers bump elbows with traditional Brazilian rhythms and melodies, making for a musical document in time not often remembered.
To this end, “Por Quê” allows humming drones, pained vocals and melancholy guitar to coalesce in contradictory reverence. The opening minute bathes in understated resolution, which breaks as acoustic plucking plunge the composition into desperation. In its final moments, the introductory synth textures double back, leaving us with a distinct emotional resolve. We push outwards as quickly as we push backwards.
