"Story" is a poetic blend of r&b and hip-hop from rising Nigerian-Canadian artist, ODIE. During 2018, I could not stop listening to ODIE's Analogue project, and "Story" is still one of my favorite tracks on the album. 2017 was a very rough year for me, but listening to ODIE's album throughout 2018 helped me develop a healthy mindset. Throughout the project, ODIE expressed all his genuine emotions and thoughts, which made the record relatable and inspiring. This transparency is very much present in this week's playlist track, "Story."
In the song, ODIE raps and sings about how his struggle with depression and his ambitious dreams.
"I can't wait till I'm sitting on more racks / Cause all I ever wanted was Kodak, moments / But I / Don't listen now I'm stuck in a rut / In my own prison wanna open the lock."
However, he still remains hopeful that he will achieve his goals and dreams.
"Cause I've been tryna find the words for my story... / It'll all be right in the morning / So hold faith for a little / Don't play with your peace of mind."
This song ( and the whole album, too) motivated me to be more positive, continue to improve myself, and even pursue my interests (this new mindset also motivated me to apply to be a curator at Music To). Now, every time I look back at how far I have come and what I still want to accomplish in the future, I can't help but be grateful and hopeful.
Anyway, the instrumental for the song is very sunny and entrancing. The beat features wavy synths layered over a perfect African drum rhythm. Additionally, ODIE delivers a superb melodic performance that compliments the instrumental very well. The positive vibe and smooth instrumental make this song perfect to play during a picnic on a sunny day.
Overall, "Story" is an inspirational track with poetic lyrics and beautiful sounds. ODIE is a very talented artist, and I can't wait to see what else he has in store.
