Last Friday, Chance the Rapper dropped his debut album, Big Day, three years after the release of Coloring Book. While the album as a whole is pretty bloated and missed the mark for me, I enjoyed some of the songs on the project very much. One of these songs is "Eternal," which features elements of neo-soul, funk, and rap. On the track, Chance the Rapper disses the idea of having a man or woman on the side while being in a committed relationship. Additionally, Chance the Rapper raps and sings about being committed to his significant other forever.
"We can be (Eternal), eternal (Forever and ever) / We can be (Eternal), eternal (Eternal, baby, we can be eternal, baby)."
"Side chicks can't dance like this, uh / Side niggas can't dance like this, no / No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no."
Smino complements Chance by also rapping about committing to his woman instead of having chicks on the side. Also, Smino charismatically delivers his lyrics with creative flows and cadences; it is great to see him featuring on a track with a mainstream rapper like Chance. The production on this song is absolute perfection and makes a fine addition to a summer picnic. The warm synths and piano keys layered over the funky drum pattern create a solid foundation for Smino and Chance to express themselves. Also, the soulful background vocals only enhance the positive energy that radiates throughout the whole track. Overall, "Eternal" features a wholesome message and fulfilling music that will have you dancing and smiling. Thank you, Chance, Smino, and the producers of the track for making a brilliant inclusion to the picnic playlist.
