This track is about a night of great passion and fun with a certain person. The person later learns that their lover has had a child and so begins to identify the narrator as the child's provider. Despite the songs message, it's melody, hook and bass lines holds enough power to get you moving, kicking and screaming its classic lyrics whilst among the crowd.
"Billie Jean" was a major hit, becoming an instant signature classic and fan favorite across multiple genres of playlists. It ended up being one of the best selling singles of 1983 as well as being the biggest selling single of Jackson's music career. The music video that accompanied the track also helped to revolutionize and to innovate the art of the music video as a viable means of marketing one's music. Additionally, it was the first music video to be broadcasted on MTV by an African American musician.
