The opener off Julien Baker’s latest record, Turn Out the Lights, is a short but sweet instrumental that sets the mood for the entire record.
This instrumental starts off the sound of Julien walking through a door, sitting at the piano and beginning to play. An orchestral string section accompanies her along with some saxophone, clarinet and various other effects. In an interview with Pitchfork, Julien explains that the reason she started her record off with this track was to make it feel as though she was the narrator, coming in and sitting at the piano, telling the whatever stories she had to tell through the record. She was inspired to do this by the musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone”.
This song fits well in this playlist to take you away from vocals. The vocals can sometimes be just another thing to focus on but while you’re floating through space, you have so many bigger things to focus your mind on. This track sets you free from examining lyrics and gives you the freedom to feel and think whatever you want to for a minute and a half.

About the curator - Hayden Schutz
Hayden Schutz is student from Saskatchewan, Canada. Currently studying at the University of Regina. When he’s not browsing reddit for new music, he’s usually attempting to study, training for track & field or indulging in whatever tv show he’s into that week. As of lately he’s been experimenting with video and photography but nothing that he would consider “professional quality”. Hayden’s been playing guitar since the beginning of high school and singing since he was old enough to understand the words on the radio in mom’s car.
