Back in 2011, I worked as an intern for Rolling Stone Germany one of my favorite tasks was finding a band to watch. Some time in summer or fall, I don’t remember which, I stumbled across this song. The band’s name 1,2,3 is an absolute nightmare to google so it was kind of hard to find out more about them. But eventually I interviewed them via e-mail and it was one of the most lovely - however delayed and pretty one-sided - conversations I’ve had with an artist to date.
“Work” really struck a nerve because of the stadion-rockesque structure of the song. Big, soaring guitar solos mingle with poignant percussion and singer Nic Snyder’s mesmerizing voice. It’s so simple, yet so good. The lyrics deal with menial day-to-day work, which sometimes is a real challenge on it’s own. I bet you’ve all worked at a job you’ve strongly disliked at some point in your life.
I dug up the interview, which you can read here - if you can speak German, that is. Otherwise: Google translate FTW!

About the curator - Julia Maehner
Julia knows two main passions: Music and writing. From an early age she has been making music after a fashion. When she was 13, she sat herself down and decided: “I will be a music journalist. Because I love music and writing.” After a brief intermezzo in New York City working for the music boutique agency Girlie Action as a digital marketer, she moved back to Germany. This experience helped her build her know-how for her content marketing client, the business intelligence software CoffeeCup. She still writes for several German music and tech magazines and is working on launching her own blog, amps on ears.
