In 1989 I heard Steve Morse was back from his stint as a commercial pilot with a new album entitled High Tension Wires featuring Andy West on bass, Rod Morgenstein on drums and T. Lavitz on keys. After purchasing the cassette tape (so I could listen on my Walkman) from my local Record Hunter in NYC, I bought two tickets to his show at The Ritz from Ticketmaster. Here’s the back story:
This is so engraved in my memory because I was going to take my childhood friend James to the show with me. Incidentally I was his best man for his upcoming wedding at the time and I was supposed to give him a bachelor party. But his older brother put the kibosh on it when he called me up and said I’m giving James a bachelor party. I said well okay, when? Of course, he picked the night of the Steve Morse Show.
That really pissed me off, but like they say, “Blood is thicker than water.” So, I wound up going to the Bachelor party-of all places on earth, Kew Gardens, Queens. I lived in Manhattan at the time, so I had to schlep on the A train all the way there just to watch my buddy drink and his brother’s jock friends shove alcohol down his throat until he was puking in the toilet. With that, I left, grabbed the subway back to midtown NYC just in time to catch the open notes of the Steve Morse show with another buddy.
That’s how dedicated I was to Steve and his music.
But really this song has a great melody and goes into guitar textures that few others do. In fact, I have gotten to be good friends with Steve in the past years (as we record awesome guitar instrumental songs together) and he admitted to me that Ghostwind is his favorite song!
