"Roots" is the perfect song to play on a warm, sunny day. The silky-smooth slow hip-hop production and soulful performances from Amine and Charlie Wilson are pure vibes. Also, Dreamville rapper, JID, hops on the tracks and finds pockets in the relaxed beat to deliver unique flows.
The instrumental was produced by Pasqué & Parker Corey, and they did a phenomenal job of setting the tone for this track. The deep drum rhythms and swelling synths make me want to lay down and soak up some sun. Also, the beautiful electrical guitar that hangs in the background gives this laidback song flavor.
I love the way Amine attacks the beat with confident rapping and kills the hook some mellow vocals. Amine's performance is backed up with some poetic lyrical substance that revolves around "roots". In the song, Amine talks about his background by mentioning his Habesha heritage and briefly touching on the danger in his old neighborhood. But, in the chorus, he also literally compares himself to a plant with roots, which I thought was a fantastic way of conveying his message while servicing the summer vibe of the music itself.
"It's on me / When my flaws like ice, keep my soul inside (No, no, oh) / The sun is on me / And my stems don't bite if the light shines bright (No, no, no, no, no, no, no)"
Overall, "Roots" will make a fine addition to the picnic playlist and is one of my favorite songs of 2020.
