When a shooting star darts across the night time sky, and you happen to be with a group of others, chances are that someone in the group will yell to everyone to look up in the sky to catch a glimpse of the star across the sky. What usually follows this moment is a quiet moment of awe and longing. Awe for the ones who were lucky enough to catch the star and longing for the ones who didn’t look up quick enough. A shooting star creates excitement within most of us. It sparks thoughts of outer space, how small we are in the whole of the universe, and thoughts of the future. All in a few seconds our brains fire a little.
This feeling, experience, and moment of witnessing a shooting star is how it felt to listen to Kadhja Bonet for the first time and her track Another Time Lover.
Reminiscent of Erykah Badu’s theme on Next Life Time, Bonet takes all of what made Badu’s timeless song and throws the whole groove and feel into an alternate reality. Skidding, skipping, and gliding along an astral plane. Gliding along the astral plane isn’t a soul hop as in Badu’s song but a buttery alternative groove with glitches and whirling effects that make one feel he/she has entered into a spaceship. Bonet, raised in the Bay Area California, was trained in classical music from an early age, choosing to pick up the violin. You can hear this musical background in the lightness of her sound. You’ll notice the sound doesn’t dip too far into the low end and keeps a sense of airiness to the aesthetic, that creates a soothing listen. Kadhja’s ride doesn’t stop there though. The rest of her 2018 debut ‘Childqueen” is a listening experience I recommend to all. A project traveling into many pallets and styles that create an alternative soul sound that is refreshing and promising.

About The Curator - KA II
I was raised in a community that believes in and practices the act of love, spirituality, understanding, and openness. These beliefs and practices are my foundation in this life and continue to drive my pursuit of knowledge, wisdom, and freedom. I also come from a place where the gift of rhythm and movement are interwoven into each other and into the fabric of life. It is never one without the other.
Music and Dance are not just things we do and enjoy. They are a necessity. In times of joy we dance, in times of triumph we turn the music up a little louder, in times of stress and unbalance we close our eyes and dance. It is how we feel our emotions and what ignites our creativity, intellectual abilities, and the way we see the world. Without the two, life would have no color, art, love, or culture.
Music and movement have always been the guiding light of creativity and the master teacher, therefore I aim to share how they elevate my mind, heart, and soul to think wider and to think with compassion, wit, and intellect. I hope you enjoy the content. Peace
