In the mid-late 1990s I was in music school and focused mainly on playing the string bass and studying classical and jazz. I kept up on a few trends but really missed out on a lot of "pop" music culture of the time. When I got out of that bubble I started catching up with what was happening in the rest of the world and a lot of great music in many styles. There was a lot of heavy music I had missed and after many nudges from a bandmate started listening to Deftones, I was hooked.
"Battle-axe" is one of my favorite Deftones tracks and the first one of theirs to really get me on a core level. I love the groove and heaviness of this song and somehow a sort of sad sweetness as well. You know when a song just hits that spot? Well this one does for me.

About The Curator - Danny Gordon
Danny's love affair with music started around the time he could walk. He spent countless hours in front of the record player going through his parents collection and experimented with playing violin, piano, and guitar before finding his voice on the bass in his teens.
Danny began playing in local bands in Los Angeles while studying music, eventually landing at Berklee College of Music in 1998. Following his graduation in 2001 Danny returned home and continued his career as a recording and touring bassist, most notably working with former STP singer Scott Weiland.
Danny continues to stay active in the local scene and is a devoted father teaching his children about the music he loves.
