“Every time I shed tears In the last past years
When I pass through the hills Oh, what images return
Oh, I yearn For the roots of the woods
That origin of all my strong and strange moods
I lost something in the hills I lost something in the hills”
Silky, echoed, and sweet, in “I Lost Something in the Hills” Sibylle Baier serenades eternity with melancholy graced lullaby. Through her song, Baier waxes poetic through striking lyrics that tie, but not limit her and the listener’s emotions to nature. The beauty of Baier’s voice, lyrical offering, and fingerpicked guitar transports the listener to a golden, inner landscape soaked in the nostalgia of life as a whole, even that which has not happened yet.
Her album, “The Colour Green”, which includes this song, was originally recorded by Baier on reel-to-tape recordings from her home in Germany between 1970 and 1973. After recording them, Sibylle retired from songwriting and moved to America to start a family. The album remained hidden from the world until 2003, her son compiled 30 CDs containing Baier’s recordings. Eventually, one of the CDs was brought to a record label, which published Baier’s recordings, making her songs, forgotten for 30 years, available to the world. Baier’s strikingly poignant time capsule enthralls, touches, and caresses the listener’s fears of impermanence and anxieties of anticipation. Baier creates a poetic world golden, flowing, and forever lost to, and immune from time.
“I grew up in declivities
Others grow up in cities
Where first love and soul takes rise.”
