I have not seen the movie that Mystery of Love features in, but this song makes me want to watch it.
I know I am not the only person who listens to a song--that they have recently fallen in love with--on repeat, endlessly. To me, this is that track right now: my go-to. Since it was written for the movie, the track chronicles its film's story all through its length. The story is obvious, albeit hidden under wonderful analogies. There is something else about this song: its peculiar and unsettling delivery of the feelings of painful love which it is replete with. The track explores of the tragedy of love, of the marks it leaves in its trail, and of the despair it causes in its wake. Mystery of Love is, therefore, a perfect title, for how something that inspires such pleasure can turn into something that inspires such woe is truly a mystery.
Stevens is a gifted singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. His songs allude not only to his body of work but also to individuals from history and to literature. His style is distinct and he has pretty much nailed the genre, where his work is now indispensable. I am addicted to his voice, which can hit notes most other singers only dream of. His insight into human emotions makes one wanna keep his music very close to their hearts.
If you're contemplating love this week, this song ought to be your soundtrack.
